The House Ways and Means Committee agreed to raise taxes on couples making more than $350,000 in order to pay for Obama’s government health plan.
Obama’s goal for the health plan is to bring health insurance to as many of the 46 million Americans who are currently without.
On mentioning that the new health plan would change the current system, Jim McDermott told the Washington Post, “If the private sector is so good… why do we have 50 million people with no health insurance today?”
Reuters reported that Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, said, “Congress has made historic progress on health insurance reform that will put patients and doctors back in charge.”
The House Committee on Education and Labor also approved the legislation, reported the New York Times.
Senator Christopher J. Dodd, is reported by the New York Times as to have said, “If you don’t have health insurance, this bill is for you. It stops insurance companies from denying coverage based on pre-existing conditions. It guarantees that you’ll be able to find an insurance plan that works for you, including a public health insurance option if you want it.”
